Twenty-three members of Alderson Broaddus (AB) University’s School of Nursing Class of 2020 were recognized during a virtual ceremony on Friday, May 8, for the senior nursing convocation. The event recognized the accomplishments of the graduating nursing students and marked the successful transition from student to nursing professional.
Dr. James “Tim” Barry, president of Alderson Broaddus University, provided the University welcome message. Following Dr. Barry’s opening remarks and a message from Dr. Kimberly White ’06, chair of AB’s School of Nursing, graduates were presented with nursing pins by members of their families. Students received a customized care package prior to the event that contained a t-shirt, a message of congratulations, mementos from members of the faculty, and a frameable copy of the Nightingale Pledge. The ceremony concluded with graduates reciting the Pledge, a vow of commitment to the moral and ethical values and principles to the practice of nursing.
The pinning ceremony, a time-honored tradition of nursing schools across the country, signifies a student’s completion of one of the most challenging curricula offered in higher education. “I am extremely proud of our 2020 graduates and their ability to thrive during this unprecedented time. They exhibited true dedication to completing their education and are prepared to take the next steps into their roles as nurses,” said Dr. White.

As was announced on April 20, the University is excited to recognize students on Saturday, May 30, at 1:00 PM with a virtual commencement ceremony. Alderson Broaddus remains committed to inviting the Class of 2020 back to campus for in-person celebrations when public health guidelines permit this to occur.
