Faculty develop evidence-based techniques to promote student success
Alderson Broaddus University is one of a select group of 26 institutions across the nation chosen by the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC), in partnership with the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE), to join the national Consortium for Instructional Excellence and Career Guidance. This new partnership will equip faculty across multiple disciplines with the instructional skills shown to promote student motivation, learning, and persistence. Faculty who satisfy the program requirements, are awarded a nationally recognized Certificate in Effective College Instruction that is co-endorsed by ACUE.
ACUE’s courses in effective teaching practices are based on more than three decades of research that shows effective teaching improves learning for all students. Dr. Andrea Bucklew, AB University associate provost will lead the faculty cohort in 25 learning modules throughout this year and mentor them in using new skills in their classes. AB University’s implementation of the program will begin with a course launch on August 14. Participating faculty will complete the program in modules throughout the academic year and will collaborate in applying the learned concepts into classroom settings.
“Students spend more time with faculty members than with any other university employee,” explained Bucklew. “Inclusion in the consortium will allow AB to capitalize on those faculty-to-student interactions and to enhance and improve the work already being done by various offices across campus. The increased focus on career preparation throughout a student’s education will encourage skill development and post-baccalaureate planning.”
Aligned with the latest research in cognition and adult learning, ACUE’s courses address over 200 evidence-based teaching practices, covering how to design an effective course; establish a productive learning environment; use active learning techniques; promote higher-order thinking; and utilize assessments to inform instruction and promote learning.
ACUE’s Community of Professional Practice provides continued support for educators to grow in the scholarship of teaching through member forums, expert webinars, weekly newsletters, the ‘Q’ blog, and “office hours” with leading scholars in college instruction.
“We’re extremely honored and excited to participate in this program. The consortium will directly support AB’s mission by improving student learning, degree completion, and career placement through a renewed focus on embedded career planning and preparation throughout the curriculum,” said Bucklew.
