Alderson Broaddus University Anatomy Graduates Become Educators

It comes as no surprise that following the 148th Commencement Ceremony, which included the inaugural Master of Science in anatomy graduating class, the Battler community is again celebrating student successes. Three Alderson Broaddus University alumni have, in less than six months, found themselves taking the next steps in their careers.

Just before the start of the 2019-20 academic year, Mackenzie Bergeron `18 from Newcomerstown, Ohio, Seth Bergeron `18 from West Lafayette, Ohio, and Matthew Searls from Saint Albans, W.Va., transitioned from recent graduates to faculty members.

“I decided to become a Battler because AB reminded me of home. The small-town atmosphere was exactly what I was looking for,” said Mackenzie Bergeron. Bergeron attended AB for her undergraduate study and graduated in 2018. She was later accepted into the University’s Masters of Science in anatomy program and earned her graduate degree in 2019. As an assistant professor of biology, Bergeron has begun to share the skills she cultivated during her time as a student in her role as an educator.

In 2015, Matthew Searls earned his undergraduate degree from West Virginia Wesleyan College. Searls began perusing his graduate degree in 2018 and credits the location, class size, and program goals as his reasons for joining the Battler family.  “Since it had been three years since attending undergraduate school, it took a few weeks for my mind to transition back to my role as a student. The opportunities and instructive practices of the anatomy program at AB were a great fit,” said Searls. Searls was offered and accepted the position as an assistant professor of anatomical science at Alderson Broaddus University.

Seth Bergeron received his undergraduate from Alderson Broaddus in 2018 and continued his education by also pursuing his graduate degree at AB. “I became a Battler because of the small, tight-knit community and the opportunities to obtain an excellent education,” said Bergeron. After graduating as one of AB’s first Master of Science in anatomy degree recipients, he accepted a position at West Virginia Wesleyan College as an instructor of biology.

“It was wonderful to watch our anatomy students from the Alderson Broaddus Class of 2019 grow over the last year as they trained to become educators in the field of anatomical science,” said Kristen Winter, associate professor of anatomical science.

Congratulations, Battlers!

During AB’s annual Alumni Awards Banquet, the University paid tribute to the success of its graduates by bestowing honors to seven deserving alumni.

Gary K. Washington, a 1979 graduate and native Washingtonian, was honored with the Alumni Achievement Award for outstanding contributions in his chosen field. Washington earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Alderson Broaddus University and obtained his Master of Education degree in administration and supervision from the University of the District of Columbia. Washington, who was an educator and a member of the Washington, D.C. He received numerous awards for educational leadership, including the Rubenstein Award for Outstanding Leadership, National Association of Secondary School Principals’ Principal of the Year, Virginia Commonwealth Leadership Award, and a letter of commendation from First Lady Laura Bush for outstanding leadership at Backus Middle School following 9/11.

The Distinguished Alumni Award, representing outstanding service to the University, was presented to 1980 graduate Dr. Cynthia D. Sofhauser. Sofhauser obtained her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Alderson Broaddus University and holds certification in advanced holistic nursing and nursing education. She earned her master’s degree in adult health nursing from the University of Pennsylvania, where she was prepared as a cardiovascular clinical nurse specialist, and received her Ph.D. in nursing from the University of Texas. Nathaniel is now professor emerita at West Virginia University School of Nursing, where she teaches bachelor, master, and doctoral level courses. She is widely known for her contributions to the field of nursing grounded theory and public policy.

The Outstanding Young Alumni Award, which recognizes an individual for exceptional achievement in their field within ten years of graduation, was presented to 2007 graduate Adam L. Cheeseman. Cheeseman received his degree in secondary education from Alderson Broaddus and holds a master’s in biblical studies from Liberty University and a Superintendent’s Certification from Salem International University. He now serves as Superintendent of Doddridge County Schools and is currently pursuing his doctorate in strategic leadership at Liberty University. Cheeseman’s leadership style is focused on meeting the needs of the holistic child to prepare students who not only are college or career prepared but also prepared for life after high school. During his tenure as Superintendent, graduation rates have increased, and district statewide academic achievement has improved.

Each year, a Lord and Lady are selected to preside over the Homecoming Festivities. The distinction was awarded to Dr. Scott and M. Jane Kavanagh, a couple who differentiated themselves through their service, dedication, and gifts to AB. Scott graduated from AB in 1969 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and earned his doctorate from the Graduate Theological Foundation. M. Jane graduated in 1969 with a bachelor’s in psychology and obtained dual certification in early childhood and elementary education. Since retirement, she has volunteered as a tutor with Literacy Volunteers of Greater Syracuse and now mentors at the University of New England.

“AB has amazing alumni, and this year we were so blessed to have so many distinguished alumni return to the mountaintop and help us celebrate one another’s lifelong achievements,” President Barry said.

This year’s Homecoming represented milestones for several groups. AB’s Class of 1969 celebrated its 50th-year reunion and induction into the E.J. Willis Society.

Rugby Player Geared Up for Alderson Broaddus’ Inaugural Season

Jayla Twitty, an 18-year-old from Cincinnati, Ohio, majoring in elementary education, is one of many new faces of the women’s rugby team at Alderson Broaddus University. Ahead of her collegiate athletic career, Twitty won two state championships, accomplished an undefeated season for her high school team, traveled halfway across the world to play rugby, and was recognized as one of the best female rugby athletes in the country.

Twitty began her rugby career in high school, crediting an encouraging teacher for her involvement in a sport she later came to love. “I got involved with rugby by being nudged into it. A teacher at my school handed me a flyer for a new athletic team and told me to show up to practice,” said Twitty. “I fell in love with the sport in the first practice—ever since then, I have been playing nonstop.”

The summer leading into her freshman year at Alderson Broaddus University, Twitty became a member of the Midwest Thunderbirds High School Rugby team, hopped on a plane, and flew more than 3,000 miles for the opportunity of a lifetime. Along with the future stars of USA Rugby from Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, Twitty participated in a ten-day rugby tour in Ireland which featured three matches against top-class opposition, top-class training sessions, and an exclusive tour of the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

As a USA Rugby All-American and a member of the Thunderbirds, Twitty said she gained integral insight into what it takes to transition from high school to collegiate sports. “Playing with the Thunderbirds in Ireland introduced me to a whole new level of competition and dedication to the sport,” said Twitty. “Battling against teams with years of experience showed me how much I still have to learn and how much room I have to grow.”

Laura Miller, head coach of men’s and women’s rugby at AB, alongside assistant coaches John Baker and Amelie Poulin, began recruiting Twitty after watching her play in a tournament for Walnut Hills High School. Coach Miller recognized Twitty as an up-and-coming name in rugby and received recommendations from her high school coaches.

Twitty said she chose Alderson Broaddus because of her confidence in the team’s leadership and the fit for her needs as a student-athlete. “When I started looking at colleges, I decided I needed to attend a smaller school so that I could concentrate on my studies in an environment with fewer distractions. Not many small schools had rugby; AB did. Because of rugby, I constantly hold myself to a higher standard. You have to trust that the team will do what needs to be done for everyone to be successful.”

Twitty first visited Alderson Broaddus University’s campus in January and committed to becoming a Battler the following spring.

“We are thrilled that Jayla chose AB to continue her rugby career. Athletes like Jayla, who seek out challenging new experiences, exemplify the qualities we look for in our athletes, said Coach Miller. “Jayla comes to AB with a strong rugby background; we are excited for her to grow alongside her teammates as we debut our women’s rugby program this year.”

The women’s rugby team are set to play their inaugural tournament on November 3. Go, Battlers!

AB’s Ledford Scholars Present Research at Annual Summit

Two among Alderson Broaddus University’s ranks have distinguished themselves, again, as Ledford Scholars. The Appalachian College Association (ACA) announced in March that Levi Summe and Jasmine Kyle would each be awarded funding to support and enable them to work on a significant research project during the summer of 2019. Their research projects came to fruition with a presentation of their research findings during the ACA Annual Summit in September.

Levi Summe is a biology major at Alderson Broaddus University, an ACA affiliated institution, and two-time Ledford Scholar. Summe received more than $3,000 to continue his research project on Northern saw-whet owls. During the summer of 2018, Summe built 216 nesting boxes and placed them throughout the Monongahela National Forest. His work this summer focused on nest box monitoring and habitat characterization at all the box locations. Summe chose to continue his research for a second year and presented his findings on “assessing nesting box location preferences to improve conservation of Northern saw-whet owls (aegolius acadicus) in the Highlands of West Virginia.”

Two-time Ledford Scholar Jasmine Kyle was awarded $4,500 from the ACA for her senior research project on the bat population of the Monongahela National Forest. Kyle is a dual environmental science and natural resource management major and a senior at Alderson Broaddus. Kyle spent nearly a month camping throughout the Monongahela National Forest and working in tandem with Sanders Environmental, Inc. During her data collection, Kyle compared both stationary acoustic and mobile acoustic recordings to determine the best methods for detecting certain species of bats.

“Alderson Broaddus offered me the opportunity to get out in the field and pursue my research interests,” said Kyle. “My professors gave me the skills to be successful and inspired me to pursue exactly what I was interested in.” Kyle presented her research on “comparison of bat detection methods in the Monongahela National Forest” at the ACA Annual Summit in Tennessee during the Ledford Scholars poster presentation and has plans to continue her study as part of her senior research symposium in December.

This year, the Appalachian College Association recognized 32 undergraduate students as the 2018-2019 ACA Ledford Scholar Recipients. The purpose of the scholarship is to provide financial assistance for students enrolled at ACA member institutions with summer research in the fields of laboratory and fieldwork, interviews, special collections, and participant observation. The program culminates with the Ledford Scholars making a public presentation of their research findings at the ACA’s Annual Summit.

President Barry Delivers AB’s 2019 State of the University

In delivering his second State of the University address on Tuesday, November 12, Alderson Broaddus University President Dr. James “Tim” Barry expressed his most optimistic view of the University’s future since becoming the president in 2018. Dr. Barry spoke to students, faculty, and staff about the University’s challenges and opportunities, highlighting AB’s social and economic impact on the community.

President Barry explained that despite the challenges facing West Virginia and higher education, AB continues to move forward to provide the highest quality education and deliver innovative programs to meet students where they are in contemporary society. He reinforced the importance of continuing to shape the University’s critical messaging, offering students transformative opportunities to learn the principles of civic engagement, communication, critical thinking, diversity, and ethics.

“Last year, we were experiencing a great many changes in higher education and as an institution. Higher education is very diverse and ever-changing in the contemporary world,” said Dr. Barry. “By assessing where we have been, where we are, and where we are going, we practice what we preach.”

Dr. Barry spoke confidently about the future and acknowledged the fact that higher education institutions are significant employers and economic drivers in many states. Alderson Broaddus is a more than $50 million economic engine for Barbour County and the surrounding areas—its most substantial economic impact to date.

“Each year, we have grown, and we are on an upward trend. The University has continued to impact the growth of jobs in the community significantly and celebrated a 10 percent increase in incoming student enrollment,” said Dr. Barry. “We are attracting a great deal of talent; the key is keeping that talent in West Virginia.”

Working alongside faculty, staff, and the Board of Trustees, Dr. Barry is working on expanding AB’s footprint outside of Barbour County by growing partnerships and fostering program initiatives in the surrounding areas. Dr. Barry explained that AB will continue to further relationships and establish educational partnerships. The University spent the better part of the year entering into agreements with Pierpont Community Technical College in Fairmont, New River Community and Technical College in Beckley, and BridgeValley Community and Technical College in South Charleston.

Dr. Barry closed the State of the University by thanking his Alderson Broaddus family for their continued support of the legacy, the history, and the mission of the Battler community.

The Alumni Association provided $25,000, enough funding for 40 desks and chairs for two classrooms. Students have been attending classes, organizational meetings, and study sessions in the newly renovated spaces.

“The Delphic Alumni Association is both honored and proud to give back to our alma mater by funding new classroom furniture for two classrooms in Withers-Brandon Hall. This effort was the least we could do for our great institution, who gave us so much as students to prepare us for our life’s work,” said Ed Snively ’71, president of the Delphic Alumni Association.

The Sigma Delta Nu (Delphic) fraternity formed at Alderson Broaddus during the 1959 spring semester. Established by students Leroy Conrad ’61, Jim Coman, Richard Messner ’61, and Paul Malcolm ’61, the purpose of the fraternity was to bring fellowship and community to the campus. Currently, the fraternity has 30 active members. Fraternity members, past and present, had the opportunity to network and fellowship during this year’s annual meeting.

Alderson Broaddus University has 14,000 reasons to be thankful this holiday season. Earlier this year, members of the Battler community were invited to participate in the Faculty Staff Annual Fund Drive, a yearly fundraising effort to provide enriched educational experiences for students and valuable resources through donations to the University’s Annual Fund.

Last year, AB’s 2018-2019 Faculty Staff Annual Fund Drive participation rate went up 12.5% over the previous year, and dollars raised increased by 44%. This year, the Annual Fund Drive celebrated a total of 101 gifts and a nearly $14,000 commitment from faculty and staff members.

“Alderson Broaddus University employees have the opportunity to support the mission and students of the Battler community. Our faculty and staff members are the heart and soul of Alderson Broaddus,” said Director of the Annual Fund Sandra Frame. “Together, our gifts make a statement. Each gift impacts the lives of our biggest investment: our students.”

All employees are encouraged to give at a level they feel comfortable, and donations, dollar for dollar, benefit all students and facilities by making tuition costs more affordable, providing essential classroom and campus resources, and aiding students to study abroad and participate in internships.

Alderson Broaddus University was pleased to host its inaugural First-Generation Student Day on Friday, December 6. This celebration was part of a nationwide campaign to honor students who are the first in their families to attend college and celebrate the achievements of our first-generation students.

The Office of Student Affairs coordinated the event as a way to bring campus and community awareness to the prevalence of first-generation students currently enrolled in higher education and the exceptional contributions these students are making to society.

“Education has always been very important to me,” said Megan Avery, associate director or housing operations and student engagement. “Growing up in a rural area, education opened avenues that would not have been opened otherwise. I feel very blessed to work for an institution that recognizes that education can change lives and offers the same types of opportunities to students that I was afforded. I hope that I can pour into and inspire our students at AB in the same way that others inspired me.”

First-generation students who attended the event received a button and signed a banner that will hang in the Student Center to commemorate the event. Postcards were available to students to send a message to the person who inspired them to become the first in their family to attend a higher education institution. Students were encouraged to learn more and discuss topics such as what it means to be first-gen, how to navigate campus resources, as well as share their personal stories of identifying as first-generation and overcoming different obstacles throughout college and beyond.

First-generation students are an asset to the Alderson Broaddus University community. Alderson Broaddus invited first-generation students to participate in the event to enjoy lunch and fellowship with AB’s first-generation faculty, staff, and alumni.

AB students enjoyed a semester traveling throughout Europe this fall as part of the Alderson Broaddus University Battlers Abroad: International Learning and Service program. Since its inception more than 30 years ago, large groups of Alderson Broaddus students have been traveling abroad as part of a three-month full-emersion experience that emphasizes travel as a means of high-level, intensive, and ultimately rewarding learning. Battlers Abroad allow students to travel throughout Europe while earning credits toward graduation.

“The academic value of studying abroad is very significant,” said Bill Klaus, AB’s director of international learning and service. “Alderson Broaddus University, as a whole, is committed to making a program like this successful.”

Nine students, accompanied by Professor Klaus, director of international learning and service, and Program Assistant Lora Owston ’19, participated in courses including European Geography, European History since 1815, and Conversational German. Classes are hosted at Haus Wartenberg, a bed and breakfast near the historic city center, in Salzburg, Austria. The courses are designed to provide a dynamic and hands-on curriculum that meets the students’ liberal studies requirements.

“Studying abroad helped me develop skills and gain experience. Living in a culturally rich environment was an opportunity to exercise adaptability, creativity, and teamwork,” said Clara Runho Lucarelli, a junior double majoring in marketing and business administration.

“Our students were able to travel off the beaten path and immerse themselves in aspects of the European life that few tourists ever see. They spent time hiking, visiting local cafes, and meeting Europeans from diverse locations and backgrounds,” said Klaus. “A great deal of the semester is spent participating in self-directed travel, and they each took to the experience.”

During their time in Europe, students were able to see many of the iconic sights, including Michelangelo’s David and the Sistine Chapel, the castle and Charles Bridge in Prague, the Van Gogh Museum of Amsterdam, and the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre Museum in Paris. Recent trips included places as far north as Ireland, as far east as Romania, as far south as Malta, and as far west as Portugal.

Students returned to campus ahead of the holiday season and will have the opportunity to share their recollections with classmates, faculty, and staff during a presentation in the spring.

Alderson Broaddus University’s Christian Bak has been a Battler for less than a year and is already making a significant impact. Christian Bak, who is a freshman mathematics major, holds a 3.5 cumulative GPA, and is a member of Phi Beta Lambda, comes to Alderson Broaddus from Therwil, Switzerland and will travel home for the holidays with plenty to celebrate. Following the first round of the West Virginia Collegiate Business Competition hosted in November, Bak has advanced to the semifinal round of the contest.

“Being selected for the WV Collegiate Business Plan semi-finals is a substantial achievement, and I am excited to present my idea in greater detail to a panel of experts,” said Bak. “I’m confident that I am bringing a unique idea to the STEM & Innovation category, as it confronts societal problems rather than practical inconveniences. Furthermore, I get the opportunity to demonstrate another aspect of my intelligence interlinking it with my competitive nature. I’m very grateful.”

Eighteen state colleges and universities will be represented in the 2019-2020 West Virginia Statewide Collegiate Business Plan Competition semifinals, with a total of 31 teams moving onto the next stage of the competition. Out of 204 entries from 18 different institutions throughout the state, Bak placed in the top ten of the STEM & Innovation category and has advanced to the semifinals of the statewide competition.

“I am very excited that Christian decided to participate in the business plan competition, especially since he is in the first semester of his freshman year,” said Assistant Professor of Business Austin O’Connor. “With his determination and business concept, he has an excellent chance to place if not win the competition.”

In January, Bak will advance to the semifinal round of the competition. He will submit a written feasibility study, present a two-minute elevator pitch to the judges, and participate in a series of interviews with business professionals. The winner in each category will receive the grand prize package of $10,000 cash and consulting services to start their business. Additionally, $20,000 of at-large prize money will be awarded to deserving teams.

About WV Collegiate Business Plan Competition

The West Virginia Collegiate Business Plan Competition affords college students around the state the unique opportunity to make a business idea come to life with the support of state institutions of higher education and seasoned business professionals from around the country.

Alderson Broaddus University students are “Crafting for a Cause” to help those in need this holiday season. For the second year in a row, students worked throughout the fall semester on projects that will be enjoyed by foster children this Christmas.

Now in its second year and with a focus on special interests, the Alderson Broaddus First-Year Experience program provides students with experiential learning opportunities including seminar-structured courses and campus assimilation practices. Each course is designed expressly to acclimate new Battlers to the higher academic expectations while learning about various resources and services available on campus.

Students worked throughout the semester to create handcrafted items to be donated to a local youth advocacy program in Fairmont. Participants were able to display their work to the Battler community during a craft showcase in December.

“‘Crafting for a Cause’ allows our students to try something new and to learn and demonstrate skills and knowledge in a way they may never have thought possible,” said Amy Mason, director of AB’s Academic Center for Educational Success. “The course allows them to be creative and to take pride in the creative process.”

Hand-tied, quilted lap blankets, a variety of stuffed toys, and rolling wooden race cars will be delivered to the National Youth Advocacy Program in Fairmont ahead of Christmas.

“Because we give away what we make,” said Mason, “our students learn about genuinely serving the needs of others, and that supports our institution’s belief in the value of interacting with, and making a positive impact on, our local and regional community.”

AB’s Jayme Hykes Receives Navy Commission

Jayme Ann Hykes, a 2014 graduate of Indian Valley High School, recently graduated with honors from Alderson Broaddus University with a Bachelor of Science in nursing.

In her junior year at AB, Hykes applied for and received one of the prestigious Naval Nursing Academy awards, given to only 30 students across the United States. The award was given as a result of her personal letter to the Navy, faculty recommendations, and her strong academic record. This award also included stipends for the completion of her degree and was the first such award given in the long history of Alderson Broaddus University’s nursing program.

In July, Hykes passed her state boards, and in a ceremony held in Wheeling, W.Va., she received her commission as an ensign in the U.S. Navy.

As part of her Naval requirements, she attended a five-week Officer Development School in Newport, R.I., and graduated on Oct. 18. At the close of the school, she was one of three officers who had speaking presentations at the official buffet ceremony for 300 family members and guests of the 85 graduates.

Hykes is stationed at the Naval hospital in Jacksonville, Fla., where she reported on Oct. 22. Her deployment will be for four years with many options available to her which will provide further growth and development opportunities.

She is the daughter of Eric Hykes of New Philadelphia and the granddaughter of Harold and Alice Shade, also of New Philadelphia.
